Hindus celebrated the new year by donating to the needy

Hindus in Malawi on Monday packed their temple in Blantyre to donate items worth K2.5 million (US$6 250) to the needy and pray for peace as part of celebrations for their new year, 2070.

Chairperson of the Hindu Community Veni Ganatra said it is only when humans are cleansed from ignorance that they can be guided by light.

“As Hindus, we believe humanity is one. We are not different from one another; that is why during these celebrations we donate to the less privileged and also honour some of our workers. If we cannot help then we are not good at all,” said Ganatra.

He said Hindus have dedicated the new year to praying for peace, love and tranquility in the country.

“Our religion is built on principles of love and peace among the human race. The world is a family. We cannot afford to leave as if we do not know each other,” he said.

Beneficiaries from Gonawamo Orphanage Centre hailed the Hindu Community for the gesture and called on other Malawians to emulate them.

In Malawi, the Hindu Community has been celebrating the festivals for about 105 years. The celebrations are held across the world.
